It’s been almost 9 years since the last new title in the main game series of Kingdom Hearts. Despite that, they still have one of the most loyal and dedicated fan bases to any game series in history. Recently at the Jump Festa event in Japan, new footage was shown for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts games and while it’s little more than what we received at E3 in July, fans are still going crazy.
Square Enix gave us a near 4 minute trailer for Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue, showing gameplay from Dream Drop Distance, Birth by Sleep and 358/2 Days; all games that were previously only released on the handheld Nintendo consoles. There has been no word yet whether 2.8 will just be a collection of HD remakes or if there will be added content to any of the titles, but if the Final Mix games have taught us anything, Square is bound to sneak in a few new missions or keyblades somewhere along the line. Kingdom Hearts 2.8 will has a confirmed 2016 release date on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
There was also a short look at Kingdom Hearts 3, with a trailer that wasn’t quite as long as the one for 2.8. The world of Tangled was the first confirmed new world for Kingdom Hearts 3, showing off the bright colors off the movie that inspired it in both the environment and heartless Sora and gang faced. There was also a peek at the world of Hercules returning once more; it wouldn’t be a Kingdom Hearts game without the grueling tournaments that are always held there.
Unfortunately, there has been no release date set for Kingdom Hearts 3. The game is said to be in development still, so there’s really no telling when it can be expected. At least we can look forward to Kingdom Hearts 2.8 some time in this upcoming year; and hopefully a 1.5 and 2.5 Final Mix reboot to the PS4 in the near future.
