Hideo Kojima Describes Transmedia Franchise Goals


In an interview with Gamespot on Friday, Hideo Kojima talked about the project that is already in development at his new studio, Kojima Productions. While the game remains unnamed and largely undescribed, Kojima did sketch out some of the concepts and goals he has for his next project, including building a franchise that would have outlets across many different entertainment mediums.

The new game, which will be developed in partnership with Sony, is an original IP. Kojima stated that while he cannot answer conclusively on whether or not the new project would develop into a series in the same way that Metal Gear Solid famously has, but in the interview Kojima stated “I want to make something that will have a big enough impact to become a series.”

He expanded on that, stating that “By impact, I mean from the things that are unique to the game, the characters, and the world. This impact can lead into something outside of games, such as anime, manga, figures; something that is rich enough to expand.”

Kojima also spoke at length about his relationship with his new partner, Sony. He stated “They [Sony] are not controlling what I’m doing at all; that was part of the conditions, and Sony was very respectful towards me and what I do. In that regard, it’s been very nice, and very pleasant.” He also spoke briefly about the type of game world he wanted to create, one that encouraged “a lot of freedom and interactivity,” and also said that “Sony is supporting us to make a big game that’s edgy with a strong story that gives the player a lot of freedom, with new elements, and I don’t know if that’s possible. But we’ll see.”

While we are still far away from seeing what Kojima really has coming for us, Kojima also mentioned his commitment to staying on time and on budget for this project. Hopefully we’ll have a chance to learn more concrete details soon.
